Don't want to have to worry about keeping your screen and stylus very clean to avoid damaging the screen? Get a screen protector! There are many ways to protect your screen, you could just keep your screen and stylus very clean, avoid using it in dusty or other hostile environments. You could try to make your own screen protector from a multitude of products including; overhead transparencies, low adhesive transparent products such a windows decals, a product such a the film used to winterize your windows or any number of nylon, polyester,  polyethylene, Mylar or other transparent plastics. These product might just to do the trick, but you will find that many of these product are either difficult to apply, make your screen hard to read and scratch very easily. There are a few companies that make commercial products that are better (or worse) than the the home made screen protectors.

The G2 from PDA Screen Protectors is very much like using a home made protector using an overhead transparency cut to the right size. The unit is cut larger than the screen size and slips under the edges and then covers more than the face of the screen. That is were the similarities end. Overhead transparencies are usually not all that clear and tend to scratch very easily. The G2 is very clear, one side is designed not to stick to the glass and the other is designed to resist scratching. They are built to last a very, very long time. You may find that it lasts as long as your PDA, only time will tell.

It only took about 4 days for the G2 Screen Protectors to arrive in my mail box. Yes they are mailed; as the product does not cost that much, if they were couriered the fees to get them to you would probably exceed the cost of the product. That does make sense so they are mailed instead. Upon arrival you will get more than just the protectors, you get a cleaning cloth and very easy to follow directions.

Before you install the G2 you must clean your screen very thoroughly. As the G2 is so clear, if you don't, you will see every spec of dust and mark on your PDA. Those marks and dust will be nicely protected underneath the protector, and if you are like me, it will drive you crazy that you have not only protected your screen but the dust and marks as well.

The first time I installed the protectors I had a bit of problem, not only did I not clean the screen as well as I should have but I also failed to center the unit properly. What resulted was dust under the G2 and my unit did not turn off properly, resulting in the unit shutting down. I did not loose any data because the Palm V (the unit I decided to test it with) registered the battery drain and shut itself down, waiting for me to recharge it. I emailed tech support at PDA Screen Protectors to find out what I had done wrong. The response came within a day, suggesting that I had not centered the protector properly.  In that I had dust under the screen I decided I would remove the G2, clean the screen again and then reinstall it. I followed the removal instructions and used some tape to grab the unit and help to uninstall it. In the instructions they do state that "damage may occur to it" if you try to remove the protector. I was very careful and did not damage the G2. They are very tough for such a thin polyester film.

Once installed you can hardly tell it is there; Did I already say that they are very clear? I will say it again! They are extremely clear! With the backlight on I could not tell it was there at all. As with all protectors the response to the stylus was different than with nothing on the screen. I had to press slightly harder on the screen. This was not a real drawback, just an observation.

Tech Specifications:
7-mil polyester (7/1000 of a inch thick)
bottom side designed not to tack onto the screen
top side is scratch resistant, "it will stand up to pencils, pens, fingernails and even steel wool" (John Salazar)
Check out the FAQ's on http://www.screenprotectors.com/ for more details and a little bit of history on how this product is developed.

Final Words:
The G2 is the clearest, toughest product I have seen to date! At it's low cost, and for the protection it gives, the G2 is a product you should take a look at if you want to protect your screen.
